‘Tis the Season to…breathe deeply and say ‘Ommmm’

December 2nd, 2008

This is the time of year where my exercise routine tends to fall into oblivion. And yet this is when exercise is most needed. Not just because all of the eggnog and fudge that I tend to consume during the month of December, but because it helps to alleviate all that stress that can begin to build up. Right about the time I start to tell myself that there is no possible way that I can fit exercise into my day - that is exactly when I know that I need to start pronto!

Although a brisk walk through the chilly sunshine, a moonlit stroll among falling flakes, or an hour of sledding with the kids can also do the trick (and put you in the holiday spirit), I personally love 15 minutes of yoga each day in the warmth of my home while kids are either at school or napping. It has become my valued alone time. The Gorgeously Green book has a fantastic quick and simple routine that anyone can fit into a busy schedule. I tried finding it on her site with not much luck but RealAge has a great ’sun salutation’ routine that is very similar to what I do.

Although it may seem like just one more thing to add to your ‘To Do’ list, the benefits definitely outweigh the costs. I immediately feel more focused and also have a sense of accomplishment that I have done something good for myself - and ultimately my family.

After all, no one wants to have a Grinch in the house this year.
