Living in a rural setting, it is always a bit of a struggle to find and have access to all the glorious green products that city dwellers have readily available to them. I also find it a bit counter-productive (and ridiculous) to drive 40 minutes to my nearest ‘metropolis’, emitting greenhouse gases along the way, to buy something that has less of an impact on our environment.
Up until recently, I would just keep a list of what I wanted to buy and then combine my trips into the big city. Unfortunately, I would also sometimes have to compromise and buy items that were less than green here in town. I have also made environmental purchases online. However, most sites are located in the US, and shipping to Canada is often cost-prohibitive.
I am happy to say that I have now discovered a new online Canadian alternative. Green Cricket is a website that features environmentally friendly products. The Toronto-based company offers a wide variety of homecare products and are very up-front about the products they sell and why they have selected them.
Another fantastic feature from Green Cricket is their Green Rating System. Green Cricket assesses every product offered on their site using a range of environmental factors that span the product’s lifecycle. They’ve grouped their ratings into five main criteria to evenly assess each product. You can access the assessment for a product you’re interested in by clicking on “Read Full Review” beside the product’s image. Products are rated on their ingredients, packaging, process, certifications and distance to market.
With the fairness of full disclosure, I will say that Green Cricket did approach me to review some of their products. You will see my very honest reviews of those products in the next couple of days. However, I have also ordered additional items from their site and I have to say that I am very impressed with their shipping time, prices and the quality of items that they offer. Green Cricket is a company with integrity. Because of this, I would love to see a wider variety of products offered on their site so that I can purchase even more of my necessary items from them. They are a relatively young company and I hope that as they increase their customer base, they will be able to add even more reliably green products.
Help me spread the word!!!!

Even here in the bustling east coast of the US, I live in a pocket of rural that has little in the way of organic, especially in the winter months. Googling organic produce usually turns up a few companies that will ship fresh food and produce. Thanks for the tip on
Green Cricket. I’ll add them to my resource list!
