Tub for Two

August 13th, 2008

I always knew this day would come. Tonight something happened that I’ve been anticipating since having children. I’ve known about this moment after listening to countless reminiscings of childhood from friends and family. I’ve never experienced it myself because, although I have 4 other siblings, I was born quite a bit later than the rest and therefore bathed alone.

Of course I’m talking about turds in the bathtub.

I was folding laundry in the bedroom when the giggling and splashing emanating from the direction of the bathroom turned to screams from my daughter, Katie. As I rushed in, she was halfway out of the tub, displacing water across the wall and floor in her haste to get out of our old clawfoot tub. “POO! POO! IT’S POO!”

The perpetrator, Jack, was still sitting in the water looking a little dazed and sheepish. Two turds floated next to him among the bobbing tub toys.

I will leave out the rest of the gritty details. Let’s just say, more panic ensued as my husband entered the scene. After we all calmed down, Jack was ushered to the toilet, Katie had a quick rinse in the shower, and I was left to clean up the mess.

Now we come to the point of my little narrative. How do you safely disinfect a tub and toys that have just been treated like a loo?  Vinegar.  After removing the nuggets and draining the water, I doused everything with white distilled vinegar. I let it sit for 30 minutes to kill most of the germs (I’ve heard 99.9% - same as Lysol). Then I rinsed it all with hot water. No need for any horrible cleaning agents going down the drain. My conscience is clear.

Of course this is the end of an era. Katie will never set foot in that tub with Jack again.

Hey, this is the first blog I’ve ever been on. Hope this works.

I’ve switched to white vinegar cleaning the kitchen. Is it really essential to leave it on for 30 minutes to disinfect?

    Very funny story!

Thanks for the comment. I have always heard to leave the vinegar on for at least 30 minutes then rinse. I especially do this if I have a cutting board with raw meat juice on it (or poop in a tub). But I found this great article about vinegar and peroxide. Seems legit and alleviates the wait time. http://www.michaelandjudystouffer.com/judy/articles/vinegar.htm
